This group is primarily a talking therapeutic support group for those aged 11-18. It’s spilt into two sessions; 4-5pm for 11-13s and 5-6pm for 14-18s. Those who attend the group have a say in how the group is run as it is important they get the most out of it.

We start the sessions checking in on our mood, individuals chose whether that’s current mood or across the week. Mood cards are used to help members get in touch with what is going on inside them. We then move on to an activity based on a topic around mental health, which changes each week. Activities include CBT based handouts and strategies for coping with the topic of the week. ‘Anxiety’, ‘exam stress’, and ‘negative thoughts’ are some examples of topics.

Following this, a 5-10 minute meditation session will take place. It teaches how to wind down, focus the mind and get into a calm state. The session ends with a check out and a chat about the week ahead. We encourage participants think about how to put the strategies they have learnt this week into practice.

Annie aged 14 said:

‘I started coming to group because I found life a struggle and needed someone to talk to during my rough patches. This helps because I can get out how I feel and get back on track. I also made a new friend which is really good as well.’

Michael aged 12 shared:

‘I like the Somerford Arc group as it’s a way for me to let out my stress in a cool way. It is also great to make long time friends as everyone is so nice. It is an amazing place to be and people would enjoy all their time there. It helps as everyone can share what they are going through. I find that helpful as I can find ways to deal with stress that I might never have thought of.’

Rachel aged 13 said:

‘I like coming to group because I find it’s really helped me through the toughest of times. The strategies and the talking and to see everyone’s lovely faces just puts a smile on my face every Monday.’

Milly aged 13 added:

‘I like it because it’s calming and it teaches about how to cope with situations. You learn how to meditate and recognise your emotions. It’s nice to say what you feel without being judged and it’s nice to be listened to.’
